employment services

For many, a person's readiness and ability to work is a fundamental factor determining their participation in community life. Services that provide employment for people in a supported environment, or that prepare people for, and assist them to access jobs in the open labour market, have long been acknowledged as central to successful programs of psychiatric rehabilitation.

Many people referred to PRA have not worked, or have not worked for a long time, or have low job skills and qualifications. PRA offers a spectrum of job preparation, employment support and training opportunities in a range of environments to suit the individual needs of job seekers with a psychiatric disability. There is a number of Commonwealth Government programs in the employment area, and PRA is involved in providing many of them.

Open Employment (Commonwealth Funded Disability Employment Service)
(commenced 1st March 2010)

OstaraPRA

From 1st March ReEmploy becomes OstaraPRA and offers more comprehensive disability employment services in more locations.

PRA enters a new level of partnership with Ostara Australia, the national consortium of specialist psychiatric disability employment support services with the opening of four new service outlets in New South Wales, and the rebadging of our Disability Employment Services.

In addition to existing service outlets in Liverpool and Newcastle/Lake Macquarie, OstaraPRA provides service in Caringbah, Redfern, Revesby and Armidale. This will treble the number of people who are seeking jobs that we are able to support. Closer partnership with Ostara, which is one of the two largest providers of these services in Australia, with national coverage, will ensure PRA's Disability Employment Services adhere to the highest service standards, and adhere to best practice in the employment field.

PreEmployInstitute

Pre Employ Institute is an employment preparation program which addresses two specific, identified needs for PRA participants:  new, structured opportunities to enhance skills and experience, and a goal-driven program directed toward open employment.  Pre Employ Institute is a mini-vocational training college where participants have a ‘home base’ where they can access training and support, as well as practical, individualised, paid work experience in PRA (such as Platform 10 Conference Centre) or other community workplaces.  The program is driven by a realistic, negotiated contract with the participant and is interactive, supportive and goal-based.  Pre Employ Institute is housed at Level 1, George St, Redfern but will make use of all PRA workplaces to provide experience and paid employment.

Between 2010 - 2013, PreEmploy aims to work with up to 120 participants assisting them to achieve their employment goals.
