recovery
Rehabilitation is what is done to support and assist an individual to move towards fuller integration and recovery. A recovery process is what an individual chooses to do with the support and assistance offered. Research over the last two decades informs us that recovery is an intensely personal experience, meaning different things to different people. It "defines" a person's ability to live well in the presence or absence of mental illness. But recovery does not occur in a vacuum: it occurs when the service provider promotes a culture based on the knowledge that recovery is possible.
The goal of psychiatric rehabilitation is to help people become more successful and satisfied in the living, learning, and working environments of their choice. The person will be as independent as possible by our ensuring the support they may require is there when needed.
The essentials of our services that underpin this approach are:
Hope and optimism: the two most important ingredients of psychiatric rehabilitation. PRA staff and PRA facilities reflect a sense of hopefulness, activity, and expectation of improvement.
Person centred: many of the PRA settings are large, yet recovery is possible because our services operate at a personal level.
Choice: PRA works hard to offer people choice, not more of the same - employment, business, residential, social and recreational services - and at all levels.
Strengths Based: Psychosocial rehabilitation emphasizes and works on
individual strength, the "well" part of the individual.
Holistic: Psychiatric rehabilitation looks at the whole person, and
addresses the range of needs the person identifies. This might
result in PRA working in partnership with other community
organizations to ensure service users reach the most
appropriate services.
Full Partnership: the person using the service is fully
involved in the decisions and processes of their own
service use.
Independence: an essential goal of psychosocial
rehabilitation is helping people reduce dependence
and develop independence.
